What the selected answers mean — October 16, 2026
Our retrospective analysis, not official hints. These explanations discuss the selected examples; they do not establish official acceptance or scores for alternatives. The linked reveal records the official selection; the independent Replay answer pool may use a different scope.
Find a valid example in this category: Name something that comes in a pump bottle.
Selected answer: Nitroglycerin spray. Nitroglycerin spray is an unusual pump-bottle answer because the packaging belongs to a medicine rather than a bathroom or cleaning product. The US regulatory label for Nitrolingual Pumpspray identifies a metered spray, describes its bottle, and explicitly discusses its pump. That establishes the container mechanism independently of the product name. The accepted category is the spray formulation, not every nitroglycerin product: tablets and patches would not meet this packaging clue. A spray nozzle alone also does not prove a pump, since gas-propelled aerosols can look similar. Read the original regulatory label.
Find a valid example in this category: service you can get at a hair salon.
Selected answer: Hand-pressed colour. Hand-pressed colour is a specialist hair-colouring technique associated with stylist Chiala Marvici. In Redken Professional’s demonstration, she creates a rose-gold result with a paddle and a piece of plexiglass during the application process. The source explicitly places the technique in salon work and attributes it to the artist, making it a concrete service rather than an invented colour name. It fits under the broader familiar answer of hair colouring, while describing a distinct application method. That does not imply every hair salon offers it, or that hand painting and balayage are identical techniques. The reviewed scope accepts documented specialist salon services. See the original professional demonstration.
Find a valid example in this category: feature a modern car can have.
Selected answer: Emergency floating mode. Emergency floating mode sounds like a movie gadget, but BYD documents it as technology fitted to the YANGWANG U8. The manufacturer links the function to the vehicle’s motor control, waterproofing and sealing. Its Japanese explainer describes temporary flotation and low-speed steering in water, while also stating that the function has limits and is absent from vehicles sold domestically in Japan. The interesting distinction is that this is a specific emergency feature on a real SUV, rather than a general claim that modern cars are boats. Read BYD’s original explanation.
Find a valid example in this category: country in East Africa.
Selected answer: Comoros. Comoros is a sovereign island country in the western Indian Ocean, and the UN M49 statistical scheme places it in Eastern Africa. East Africa is broader than the East African Community: the UN regional list also includes island states and several countries often discussed alongside Southern Africa. Regional conventions differ, so the prepared Replay pool also recognizes DR Congo through UNECA’s Eastern Africa office and Sudan through the African Development Bank. Mayotte and Réunion appear as statistical areas in M49 but are not extra sovereign-country answers. The UN regional table records the distinction between countries and areas.
Find a valid example in this category: white sauce, dip, or condiment.
Selected answer: Cervelle de canut. Cervelle de canut sounds rather more alarming than it tastes: its name translates as “silkworkers’ brains,” but this Lyon speciality is made from cheese. In the Lyon Tourist Office’s recipe by chef Grégory Cuilleron, drained fresh cheese is mixed with garlic, chopped chives and shallot, then sharpened with white wine and sherry vinegar and softened with sour cream. The pale cheese remains the base, with green herbs scattered through it. It makes sense alongside toast or vegetables as a dip or spread. The name recalls Lyon’s canuts, the city’s silk workers. Find a valid example in this category: sport where people sit when they compete.
Selected answer: Giant pumpkin regatta. A giant pumpkin regatta turns an autumn vegetable into an actual racing boat. At Tualatin, Oregon’s West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, costumed competitors paddle enormous pumpkin boats around a lake in organized races. The city says the event began in 2004, when the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers wanted a place for an end-of-season paddle with a handful of their giant pumpkins. Those growers still supply the pumpkins. Racers occupy the hollowed-out boats themselves, making seated paddling the competition rather than a spectator activity. The unusual craft is the point: these are giant pumpkins on the water, not conventional boats decorated like them. City of Tualatin event history.
Find a valid example in this category: Name something that uses steam.
Selected answer: Aeolipile. An aeolipile turns escaping steam into rotation with remarkably few moving parts. A boiler feeds a hollow ball through one of its supports. Steam then escapes through two bent nozzles, causing the ball to spin. The Science Museum Group holds a working model made in 1914 from drawings in sixteenth-century manuscripts, attributed to Hero of Alexandria. The museum describes the device as a toy that can also be understood as an elementary steam turbine. It illustrates a useful distinction: steam can supply a pushing force as well as carry heat. See the museum’s model and explanation.
